Yosemite National Park: Mariposa Grove
Last Updated: 3/29/2024
Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is the largest sequoia grove in Yosemite, with over 500 mature giant sequoias. In 1864, President Lincoln signed legislation protecting Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley. Once you arrive at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Center there is a free shuttle service that will take you on to the Mariposa Grove arrival area.
From the Arrival Area you have several hiking options.
Big Trees Loop Trail is an easy 0.3 mile loop that is wheelchair accessible.
Grizzly Giant Loop Trail is a 2 mile loop. Allow about 2 hours to fully enjoy the trail.
Guardians Loop Trail is a more strenuous hike that is 6.5 miles round trip.
Mariposa Grove Trail is another strenuous 7 mile round trip hike to Wawona Point.
On our most recent visit, we had just enough time to hike the Grizzly Giant Loop. Enjoy the following pictures of the amazing giants that our path crossed!
Things to Know Before you Visit:
The Welcome Plaza has about 300 parking spaces and they can fill up quickly, especially during summer. I would recommend arriving no later than mid-morning.
Pets are not allowed on any trails in Mariposa Grove. They are also not allowed on the shuttle buses.
There are restrooms at the Welcome Plaza and Arrival Area, the Mariposa Grove Cabin, and near the Grizzly Giant.
The Depot, located at the Welcome Plaza, has a selection of books, maps, general info, and gifts.
Water is only available at the Welcome Plaza (year around) and Arrival Area (summer only). There are no Food Services at Mariposa Grove. So come prepared with water and snacks.
We had an amazing time walking among these graceful giants. Would definitely recommend adding it to your Yosemite Bucket List. And while you are in Yosemite, I would suggest hiking the Mist Trail. Happy Questing for Adventure!
